The McGill Science Education Research Group

What do we do?

In the Science Education Research Group, we are dedicated to advancing the field of science education and promoting inclusive learning experiences for all students. Guided by our shared values, diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to social justice, we strive to make a positive impact on the educational landscape

Our research

Our research focuses on understanding the complex dynamics of science identity work to explore how individuals' backgrounds, experiences, and sociocultural contexts shape their engagement with science. We draw on sociocultural theories to help us understand how science learners and teachers can move beyond narrow meanings of science competence, and broaden possibilities for recognition as science learners, doers and knowledge producers. Our aim is to contribute to research that disrupts power and inequity in science learning, and that leads to the development of evidence-based practices and policies that promote equitable and inclusive science education.

Together, our research threads together the following broad areas of study:

  1. Students’ science identity work and affective engagement in formal and non-formal learning in higher education settings;

  2. University-community partnerships to drive meaningful change;

  3. Science teacher identity work

Our positionalities

We acknowledge our position as settlers/guests in this space and the historical injustices that have affected Indigenous, and minoritized communities. As educators, academics, and members of our communities, we are committed to the ongoing process of listening, learning, and acting in accordance with community needs. As we navigate our research journey, we remain committed to self-reflection, growth, and accountability. We recognize that our learning is ongoing, and we welcome feedback from the community to guide and inform our work. By continually challenging our assumptions, embracing new perspectives, and striving for equity and justice, we aim to contribute to the ongoing process of reconciliation and the transformation of educational experiences for the success and well-being of all students. Together, we aspire to create a future where science education is accessible, inclusive, and empowering for everyone.
